Madden 11 ratings have been all the buzz over the last few days, and after the full AFC East ratings were released, it’s now time for the AFC West ratings to be unveiled. Starting, of course, with the Denver Broncos.

While we already knew the Denver Broncos had a team rating of 78 (no doubt impacted by the loss of Brandon Marshall), this is our first look at the full player ratings for the rebuilding franchise in this season’s Madden 11 football video game.

    why does dj williams ratings drop every year he still gets over a hundred tackles one of the best tacklers in the nfl and is the top two for most tackles since 2005 and he always gets snubbed on the pro bowl not this year not with the new line dj might lead the league in tackles and he had 5 sacks and a couple of fumbels but he is an 88

    Come on Madden heads, please tell me you understand the Moreno Speed aspect. By NO MEANS, should he be a 94 (royals speed) .. He shoud be a 90. Acceleration means how quick you get to your top speed. It has nothing to do with your top speed, and neither does agility. His Speed should be 90 but he did him self no favors in that 40. I think the DBs shoulda been better as well, Thomas should be closer to 80 overall, and Tebow (if this is all based on college) should be at least 75. But other than that, they got us right, minus the DJ williams thing…..

    D. Thomas should be higher than that. I think his overall is low because of AWR. Should be closer to 80 as another guy said. Tebow accuracy is lame, should also be higher. 70 is close to what fatboy J. Russell was last year, which is an insult. Tebow should be 75-76.

    Tim Tebow is a rushing QB and needs alot more rushing ratings and alot more passing ratings and needs to be starting QB for the Broncos!!!!! Tim Tebow needs to be a 90 percent QB!!!!!!!!

    tim tebow should hav the speed of 82-84 his throw power is right but his accuracy should atleast be a 83, his overall should be in a range of 76-79

    Yeah Tim Tebow is a rookie but is overall is all wrong. He is starter material and he is a rushing QB so his speed needs to be 94 percent and throwing needs to be 95 percent and his overall needs to be 95 percent QB!!!!!!

    he is a rookie so his awareness wont be as good when he went to college but his overall is too low, he is a 70 now, in ncaa 09 his overall is a 99

    What I do hate is that rules that apply to other people dont apply to us apparently. For example, Cowboys, Dez Bryant, runs a 4.52 and a 4.68 and his speed is 91 and acceleration is 95. Moreno runs a 4.5 as well, and is 88 speed. Perrish Cox, who ran a 4.53, whose speed is very evident in his KR is ranked a 88 speed. Stuff just never adds up when it comes to the Broncos, we always get screwed, especially in the speed aspect and speed is half the fight when it comes to madden…..

    One plausible acid test for Madden is its weekly simulations of the NFL. In week 1, Madden went 6-10-1 against the NFL line. The trouble there is that they are not doining a Monte Carlo style 10,000 runs per game and giving us the average point spread, but rather they are doing a single run of each game and their simulations themselves will capture the randomness of any one game. Madden also releases weekly updates on Thursdays for all teams and players. There does appear to be a lot of variance between speed attribute values for players and their known 40s. But you can gain a lot of insight into what matters in the NFL from Madden. I’ve used Madden as a basis for a pretty damn good model for setting point spread lines. The basic model begins with weighting positions by their contribution to point spreads (QB=25, RG=6), then adding additional layers of complexity (secondary positions, like Nickel Back, coaching rating, scheme ratings), and calibrating your model to the NFL betting lines. Once you get your model dialed in, you can use the updated Madden player ratings, your modifications to Madden’s ratings you think are off and injury/roster changes to predict point spreads. My model will seldom vary by more than a few points from the Vegas line. My Mock Broncos which I’ve been managing since January 2009 using actual NFL roster rules, the actual Broncos team salary as a cap and a live mock has a starting offensive line of Clady(98)-Kuper(86)-Pouncey(83)-Vasquez(83)-Harris(84) which adds 1.4 points to the point spread against the Actual Broncos Clady(98)-Hochstein(71)-Walton(72)-Kuper(85)-Harris(84). Note the 1 point modification for Kuper playing at his more natural pulling LG rather than at mauler RG. Going into week 6, my Mocks have a 1.98 point Offensive/Off Special Team advantage over the Actual Broncos and a 4.04 modifier to defense (the actuals have a better DL (thanks to large FA contracts I passed on, but my mocks have Orakpo and much better LB/DB depth which comes into play this week due to injuries). But so far this year the modifier to the actual Broncos games has not altered the outcome of a single game. I’m 2-3. But over 16 games I might be 1.5 to 2 games better than the actual Broncos which in the NFL is huge. Bottom line is that Madden’s overall player ratings do appear generally to have predictive value to NFL game outcomes. If Madden still pisses you off, the best statistical analysis of the NFL is at advancednflstats.com but they are still working on building individual player ratings that correlate to game outcomes.
