After over a week-long hiatus, the NCAA Football 11 blog is back and better than ever, this time detailing the ever-popular spread offense for its soon-to-be-released NCAA 11 football video game.

In the blog, which features several new screenshots and videos not seen in the nearly 30 images released earlier, Anthony White of the NCAA Football 11 design team goes through rigorous depths to give fans insight into some of the new enhancements to the spread offense from a game perspective, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how it all came to be.

NCAA 11 Blog: “From the outset when we started working on this feature, our goal was to make absolutely sure that our users, both hardcore and casual, would be able to properly execute the read option play. The first step in this process involved making sure the animations that are used by the option logic defender leave little doubt to what his intentions are. If the option logic defender crashes inside to take away the halfback he will turn his outside shoulder in and will chase the halfback. Once he’s made the decision to chase the halfback that is his target, he will ignore the quarterback. If the option logic defender decides to stay at home and spy/key the quarterback, he will take a small initial step forward out of his stance and get into his stay animation and hold his position. This makes it easy for the user to distinguish what exactly this defender is doing.”

Far from just an aesthetic change, the root mechanics of many important aspects of the spread offense have seen overhauls in this year’s game. As assistance designer Anthony White explains, zone blocking was tweaked specifically for “read option” plays in an attempt to better recreate the realism of a potentially unblocked defender.

The team even took the time to explain a little bit more about what makes the read option successful, including a full video showing you how to put it to work successfully in NCAA 11. The video will look familiar to those who have used the strategy detailed in the secret shotgun run play video for Madden NFL.
