Aaron Ross joins the 6th ranked NFL defense.

The NFL Side

It was only a few months ago that CB Aaron Ross was enjoying his second Superbowl with the New York Giants, but now he’s a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars after signing a three-year deal worth up to $15.3 million that will give the Jaguars the security they need behind an injury-recovering Rashean Mathis, and give Ross the payday he’s been waiting for in free agency.

Ross became the starter in the 2011 season when Terrell Thomas tore his right ACL for the second time in his life, opening the door for the talented-albeit-inconsistent Ross to re-establish himself as a starting corner in the league. As it happens, Ross was a starting corner in both of the Giants’ recent Superbowl victories.

In a lot of ways, Ross can be seen as the Giants’ version of the Jaguars’ Derek Cox; talented at times, confusing at others, but overall a solid addition to the roster with his best games possibly still ahead of him. We’ll have to see just how true any of that is this upcoming season, however.

Quality corners are as premium a position as they come in Madden NFL games, and the Jaguars are looking like one of the deeper teams at the position for this upcoming Madden 13 season.

The addition of Ross gives the Jaguars (as of the latest ratings update) three corners over 80 overall (Mathis 89, Cox 83, Ross 81), with two in the mid 70s directly following.

While Ross isn’t a burner in Madden, he does have awareness nearing the 80s, a solid man coverage rating of 85, and a very serviceable ability to jam receivers with 77 press. If incumbent starter Rashean Mathis doesn’t come back to full strength, then things may start looking a bit iffy, but for now the Jaguars are getting close to being one of the few teams in the game capable of being spread five deep, without losing its sanity.

Tim Tebow will be soaring with the Jets next season.

QB Tim Tebow was traded to the New York Jets last night, but it was anything but a smooth ride. When the Jets initially intended to acquire the polarizing former collegiate star, they missed a clause in his contract that would have required the Jets to pay $5 million to the Denver Broncos, which is a lot more than the $1.1 million they knew they would have to pay Tebow this upcoming season. As a result, Tebow’s hometown team the Jacksonville Jaguars jumped into trade talks and the rest of the day was nothing if not confusing.

In the end, the Jets decided to continue to pursue their initial trade and agreed to pony up the money required to secure Tebow, but not before many reports say Tebow was given a choice: Go to the Jets, or the Jaguars. With that choice in mind, Tebowmania to Jacksonville seemed like the logical destination, however when given the option, Tebow reportedly chose the New York Jets.

It has been speculated that Tebow wanted to go somewhere where he felt wanted, and while Jaguars owner Shahid Khan was pressing to make a trade happen, the coaching staff and general manager weren’t nearly as big of fans of the young prospect. Not only did the Jets coaching staff and owner want him, but they also had a plan for him in place: Under center in Tony Sparano’s Wildcat offensive packages. With that in mind, the decision might have been clear that returning home was not the right choice for Tebow.

Tim Tebow is not Michael Vick, but he certainly can have an impact in Madden 13 games this year in the right situations. While Tebow is not overly fast, he does throw a better deep ball than incumbent starter Mark Sanchez (80 vs. 74 DAC), and is as true a Wildcat quarterback as you’ll find on a Madden roster.

Tebow has the skillset necessary to shed tacklers, which can be a game-breaking quality when used out of a Wildcat system where you’re already maximizing the amount of blockers you have on the field. Fast players are great, but players who can grind between the tackles are the kind you need to be consistently successful in Madden 13 using the Wildcat, and the fact that Tebow can throw well enough to make receivers a legitimate deep threat only further establishes his utility this upcoming Madden season.

The fact that Tebow is expected to be used in a more limited role that highlights his abilities this upcoming season could also do wonders for his Madden 13 ratings. If Tebow is continually put in positions where his deficiencies are hidden and his strengths are exploited, then we could see his ratings rise even further throughout the season.

Brandon Lloyd blew up when he was in Denver, and now he’s in New England.

The New England Patriots didn’t have the cap space to make a serious run at Vincent Jackson this offseason, but they may have gotten the next best thing by signing journeyman wideout Brandon Lloyd to a $12 million dollar deal spread out over three years.

Lloyd has had a troubled past two seasons in the NFL since breaking out with 1,448 yards in his 2010 campaign. Since then, Lloyd was subjected to the Tim Tebow offense, and for a brief period spent time with the Rams. Now, Lloyd will be catching passes from the best quarterback he has ever had in his career with Tom Brady.

As far as receiver contracts go in free agency, Lloyd will be joining the Patriots at a potential bargain of a price. While Vincent Jackson inked a deal with the Bucs worth $56 million and Laurent Robinson secured himself a place in Jacksonville for $32.5 million, the Patriots signed Lloyd for only a fraction of the price.

That’s not to say, of course, that Lloyd should already be anointed a steal for the Patriots. Lloyd has garnered a reputation over the years as not being someone teams want around for too long, and his production has been extremely isolated. Lloyd is also on the wrong side of 30, but considering the letdowns the Patriots have had in recent years, you can imagine what having a big-play threat at receiver could do for the Patriots’ calculated offense.

The Madden 13 Side

Brandon Lloyd could do big things in New England this upcoming season, and in reality any receiver tagging up with Tom Brady we might say the same thing about. However, if you were trying to figure out which team would benefit more from Lloyd’s presence — the Madden 13 team or the real life NFL team — it’s unquestionably the Madden 13 team.

Lloyd has all the tools to be a dominant receiver in Madden 13, despite the fact that his overall rating is “only” 88 overall. In the areas that matter most for receiver, Lloyd is simply brilliant. The 6’0″ receiver bolsters 92 speed, 95 agility and 93 acceleration; and that’s just to get him around the field.

At the heart of Lloyd, he’s a big-play threat and Madden has crafted him perfectly for that reason. Lloyd’s catch and route running rating are both an impressive 94, while his spectacular catch rating is an unparalleled 99. If you were looking for someone to throw deep bombs from Tom Brady to, then trust me, you found your guy in Brandon Lloyd.

While Lloyd’s performance next year for the Patriots is far from guaranteed to be good, his Madden ratings should be fairly similar in Madden 13 as what they ended as in Madden 12. For that reason, and because Madden is all about big plays, there’s little reason to believe that gamers won’t be the ones benefiting the most from this signing once the season starts.

Mario Williams will change Bills games, and Madden 13 games this year.

It’s not often that one of the best pass rushers in the entire NFL hits the free agent market, but when Mario Williams put his services up on the auction block earlier this week, the Buffalo Bills invited him over to talk and never let him leave.

Holding someone hostage isn’t exactly the preferred method of getting what you want, but there’s no question that it works. Former #1 overall pick Mario Williams is now a member of the Buffalo Bills for the not-so-small price of $96 million over six years, with $50 million of that guaranteed. For a Buffalo team that is struggling to find its identity, the signing means more than just a better football team, it means hope for the small market franchise that hasn’t been to the playoffs in 12 years, and hasn’t won a playoff game in 16.

It’s believed the Bills will return Williams to the 4-3 defensive style that made him so potent throughout his career, and surround him with the kind of defensive line talent that could make him as productive as he ever was before. With perennial stud and sophomore DT Marcell Dareus manning the middle alongside long-time force Kyle Williams and the sneakily productive Chris Kelsay on the edge, the Bills have plenty of reason to think the defensive line may be their new calling card, and a reason to believe again.

The Bills are currently sitting at the #10 spot in this year’s NFL draft, and may be in perfect position to snag up a young pass rushing defensive end like Quinton Coples or Melvin Ingram to add to their rotation in attempt mass-inject talent into the position, much like the Lions did in 2010 and 2011 with its defensive tackle positions. Quarterback, however, is still an issue and the signing of Mario may simply give the team more flexibility (and reason) to select QB Ryan Tannehill, who is largely believed to be the last truly quality QB prospect before the talent drops drastically in this year’s class.

As far as Madden 13 goes, Mario Williams is close to as big as it gets in terms of impact players at the defensive end position. At 96 OVR, Williams is only 27 years old and is an athletic freak if there ever was one.

Williams’ 6’6″ frame, 84 speed, 86 AGI, 94 ACC, 86 TAK, 88 BSHD, 95 PUR and 97 FMV allow him to play with his hand on the ground, or standing up and be a dominant player on the field, giving him the flexibility to be used in whatever defensive style you personally prefer to play.

Even before Mario, the Bills defensive line had a few reasons to be feared; DT Kyle Williams is a 92 OVR, while then-rookie Marcell Dareus is already on a fast-track to a 90+ OVR career, already at an 84 rating. With Dareus and Williams presumably in the middle and Mario back to the edge, this team could get more and more difficult to handle the longer the Madden 13 season goes, as Dareus rounds out his sophomore season and Mario reaps the benefit on the stat sheet.

Laurent Robinson is a big improvement to the Jags receiving corps.

After visiting the team on the first day of NFL Free Agency, it didn’t take long for former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Laurent Robinson to strike an agreement with the Jacksonville Jaguars that will lock him up in Florida for a five-year, $32.5 million dollar deal ($14 million of which is guaranteed).

The Jaguars have been desperate for a receiver ever since the days of Jimmy Smith, and while it’s unclear whether or not they intend Robinson to be “that guy,” they certainly believe he could improve a receiving corps that didn’t do much to help its rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert last season. While Jacksonville will be Robinson’s fourth team in six years, he had a breakout season last year for the Dallas Cowboys, where he scored 11 touchdowns in the final 10 games of the season.

The 54 catch, 858 yard season Robinson put up last year was nearly as much as his entire career combined up to that point, but in a free agency period that saw Vincent Jackson join the Bucs while DeSean Jackson, Dwayne Bowe and Marques Colston stuck with their respective teams, there were few options remaining for Jacksonville. It’s likely the Jags will supplement Robinson with a receiver in the draft, which could turn the group around quite quickly.

The Madden 13 Side

While there may be questions about whether or not Laurent Robinson can be the impact player the Jags need in real life, there’s no question he will be an impact player for the team in the upcoming Madden 13. Robinson enters the Jags’ Madden roster as the top receiver right away at 83 overall, and should provide some much-needed comfort for players who were pretty much stuck throwing to either WR Mike Thomas, or the impressively game-slow TE Marcedes Lewis.

Mike Thomas is the next highest rated receiver for the Jaguars at 75 OVR, however both players should probably be treated about equal in Madden offenses, for different purposes. Robinson is quite a bit better all around than Thomas (+6 AWR, +3 CTH, +7 RTE, +1 CIT, +19 SPC, +29 BPR), however Mike Thomas is one of the best run-after-catch receivers in the entire game, showcasing 93 SPD, 94 ACC, 94 ELU, 96 SPM and 95 JKM all in one tiny 5’8″ package.

Robinson should prove to be a much better deep ball and curl threat for Jags players as his 87 CTH, 88 SPC, 87 RTE and 6’2″ frame is a strong improvement over what Thomas offered in those situations. The fact that he has a much better chance of getting off the jam (75 beat press vs. 46) also supports this belief. For strategy purposes, the Jags players absolutely needed this move to happen, and should really open things up on the field as far as playing styles go.

While the Jags still have a ways to go to clean up their receiving corps, for Madden purposes this pairing should do just fine for savvy players that know how to put their players in the right positions. Should the Jags add a top receiver in the draft, then players may be only a few Gabbert rating updates away from being a deceptively strong Madden team that can do some nice things both on offense and defense.

The Buccaneers caught the big man that makes big plays.

It’s not every day that a team can say they landed the marquee receiver in NFL Free Agency, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans can do just that after long-time San Diego Charger Vincent Jackson agreed to a five year deal with the team. It may have cost the Bucs $56 million ($26 million guaranteed) to snatch the 6’5 threat out of the hands of just about every other team in the NFL, but V-Jax’s 17.5 yards-per-catch average over his seven-year is an invaluable trait, and fans and teams know it.

There were many concerns among Bucaneers fans and brass last year over the seeming regression of both QB Josh Freeman, and he-looked-like-he-was-going-to-be-a-stud WR Mike Williams, however the latest signing of Vincent Jackson should help both players maximize their potential this upcoming NFL season. With Jackson on the other side of the field, teams will no longer be able to key in on Mike Williams on offense, and Josh Freeman’s comfort levels should soar through the roof with both players on the field.

The Madden 13 Side

Vincent Jackson is widely recognized as one of the best receivers in the Madden franchise today, and a lot of it has to do with his impressive 6’5 frame. There are few players in the game able to compete for every ball that goes into the air, and V-Jax is well-known to be one of those guys.

The addition of the massive Jackson quickly turns the Bucs offense into an intriguing one in Madden 13. Guys like LeGarrette Blount and Josh Freeman are already notoriously difficult to bring down at their respective positions. If Mike Williams can reverse his downward Madden ratings spiral from last year, then the Bucs easily have one of the biggest and sure-handed 1-2 punches at the receiver position in the game. Big, sure-handed receivers that can jump and boast a strong spectacular catch rating are a premium in Madden, and have been for years.

The egos have reunited, finally.

While everyone was focused on Peyton Manning and Mario Williams during the first day of NFL Free Agency, the Chicago Bears struck a deal with the Miami Dolphins that will send Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall to the windy city for two third round picks spread out over the next two seasons.

For the Chicago Bears, the addition of Brandon Marshall does more than help shore up a receiving position that hasn’t been much more than anemic as of late, it also reunites the talented wideout with QB Jay Cutler. Cutler, of course, was part of Denver’s core explosion a few years ago that sent the dangerous duo to opposite conferences, not to mention opposite directions in the United States.

While Dolphins fans can’t feel too good about losing the best player on their offense, the loss of Marshall may have been necessary for a team that could certainly use the extra picks to give themselves more flexibility in the 2012 and 2013 draft. While Marshall may be in the prime of his career, he could have been on the wrong side of 30 by the time the team had the pieces in place to make a run at the division.

Both Chicago and Miami, from a front-office perspective, have to feel pretty good about this deal.

The Madden 13 Side

If you’re a Madden player, you have to be happy about what Madden 13 will hold for the Chicago Bears. While Miami fans certainly won’t be too happy, it’s hard to deny that Marshall’s talent was being squandered on a Madden team that had very little in the way of quarterbacking skills. Now back with Cutler, Marshall should see his stock rise again in the Madden universe.

Madden 13 fans will also like the diversity in this year’s group of receivers. Previously, big-plays were limited to making use of the sheer speed of Johnny Knox and Devin Hester, but now the reliability of Marshall will also factor into the equation, making for a potentially trendy offensive team that could be reminiscent to how the Vikings looked a few years ago. Marshall is also a year younger than Vincent Jackson (who I’m sure many in Chicago wanted to see on the team), which is a nice bonus for Franchise mode fans.

Madden 13 should focus less on engaging with fans on social networks, and more on this.

NFL free agency is about to begin, and while the bid for Peyton Manning may be the talk around the community for the time being, our focus is turned directly toward Madden 13. In particular, we’re talking about changes to the defense that Madden needs to make, if it hopes to live up to its ambitions of innovating once again on defense.

Madden 13: Rethinking The Trench Mechanics

Earlier this year it was revealed that defense would be a real priority heading into the latest edition of the Madden NFL franchise, and with a brand-new Creative Director and Executive Producer at the helm, we have no reason to believe they aren’t serious about making this Madden their own. However, if defense really is to get better in Madden 13, it certainly has to come from more than a presentation stand point; it has to come from the trenches.

Playing on the defensive line in Madden has never been a hallmark of the franchise, especially when additions like the Hit Stick and other user-controls were clearly intended for the more visible active players on the field. But every true football fan knows that games are won and lost by the big men up front, and for Madden to become what it wants to be, it needs to completely revamp its d-line technology.

As it currently stands, players basically have two options when trying to rush the passer (or even just pressure the pocket) when it comes to the defensive line. One is called finesse moves, the other is a bull rush and as much as EA has tried to add player traits to vary the results of these actions, the truth is the only thing a player is doing is flicking a joystick one direction or the other when the ball gets hiked. Not only is this sort of mechanic unsatisfying, but it’s just not true to the game.

For Madden 13 to innovate in the trenches, it needs to start making use of the “bumper” buttons on modern-day controllers. Right now, these buttons are pretty much tied exclusively to attempting to strip the ball, when really they have a much better purpose awaiting them: Engagement control.

Give Players The Control They Crave

Imagine for a second if instead of sitting on the defensive line, waiting for the ball to hike and flicking the joystick, you actually could feel your player’s strength by engaging a player with, say, the right bumper. By holding this button down, you would “latch” onto the the offensive lineman, and subsequently battle the offensive lineman by by trying to toss and jerk his upper body in the direction you move your joystick to.

And that’s just the clinching side of things, for when you want to get things done with brute force. Without holding down the right bumper to engage the o-lineman, your right joystick should effectively become the hands of your player. Inside swims, spin moves and even quick pushes to try and keep the lineman from getting a handle on you would all play a huge part of the finnese game, and it could all be done by mapping the right joystick dynamically to the hands of your defender. Simple gestures like shining the joystick would allow you to execute a spin move (just like it does on offense), while quick flicks to the left or right would see your player try to swipe his way around the offensive lineman.

Let The Big Men Do Their Jobs

With this kind of engagement system in place, Madden 13 could even open the door for more realistic, and even more fun offensive line play on top of what it would do for defensive players. Even the whole ticky-tacky Madden holding calls would start to feel more justified, as the holding the engagement button too long on offense or even defense would result in a holding penalty.

If the changes to Madden NFL 13 don’t at least attempt to give players more control over engagement on the defensive line, then all the pretty adjustments and aesthetic improvements that may be soon to come, will really be for no reason at all. The NFL is typically decided in the trenches, and I just hope my Madden 13 games will be too.

Gronkowski is preparing for a lengthy recovery.

Rob Gronkowski was nearly unstoppable in the 2011 NFL season, but was substantially hampered in the Superbowl by an injury he sustained to his left ankle in the AFC championship game. Now, the NFL has confirmed that “The Gronk” has undergone successful arthroscopic surgery.

Gronkowski was an emergent force for the New England Patriots offense last season, as the sophomore tight end put up a historic 90 catch, 1,327 yard, 17 touchdown performance that helped lead the Patriots to the top seed in the AFC. Unfortunately, Gronkowski couldn’t play up to his pro bowl season with his injured ankle, and with a close Superbowl lost to the New York Giants where one play could have made all the difference, Gronk’ was held to just two catches.

The ankle surgery is a good sign for Patriots fans, however it will take at least 10 weeks to recover from, says Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal. With the 2012 NFL season still months away, that should be plenty of time for the game-changing TE to get back to full speed.

The Madden 13 Side

There isn’t too much for fans to worry about on the Madden 13 side of things. Gronkowski should be fully healed by the time the season comes around, which means you shouldn’t expect to see him listed as injured for franchise mode at the start of the season.

Gronkowski finished the Madden season with a ridiculously fast rise to the top of players’ minds, securing a 98 overall rating in what is probably the shortest amount of time we’ve ever seen. While he did have an injury that slowed him down, it was only one game, and we don’t imagine any of that will negatively effect his ratings heading into the new Madden game.

There has been a lot of shuffling of the elite 99 overall players as of late, and now Patriots QB Tom Brady questionably drops to a 98 in the NFL week 4 Madden 12 roster update.

With Brady coming off a unanimous MVP season, there was no doubt about who the game’s best player was. Madden 12 rightfully introduced him at 99 overall, and he was later awarded 100 throw accuracy by the fans. Somehow Brady came out of the gates in 2012 at an even higher level, piling up 940 yards and 7 touchdowns over the first two games and putting himself on pace to shatter every record imaginable. Last week, he threw for another 387 yards and 4 touchdowns, but fell a point in this week’s update. How does a man leading the league in nearly every major passing category not deserve a 99 overall? Apparently tipped passes that get picked will do that to you. Bad luck Tom.

Just last week it was Aaron Rodgers who received the coveted 99 overall rating, this week DeMarcus Ware joins Rodgers, Brady, and Revis as the game’s absolute best in the NFL week 3 Madden 12 roster update.

For as much hype as Dallas Cowboys players get in the media, DeMarcus Ware is the one who actually deserves that attention and perhaps more. Ware, who has lead the NFL in sacks at the end of the year more often than not, is on that pace again with a league-leading 4 sacks, two in each game so far. Week 1 in the NFL was even more exciting than usual, with a record 14 quarterbacks throwing the ball for over 300 yards. One of those men was Aaron Rodgers, who ascends into the 99 overall club in the NFL week 2 Madden 12 roster update.

Many experts and informed fans alike predicted players would show signs of rust after a long lockout halted most football activities, but that wasn’t the case in week 1.
